I'm a digital content writer and a social media copywriter. I'm at my best when I can brainstorm with a rambunctious group or present ideas to a large crowd. I believe good content is the backbone of every campaign and the currency of any social presence.
But let's back up a bit. To really get to know a writer you've got to know a little about their childhood.
As the oldest of six, I led the pack around our Kansas City ghetto. The day would really begin after school let out.
I started fires with magnifying glasses, was banished from a drug dealer’s yard and spied our fat neighbor standing outside in her backyard completely naked after one of her many drug binges. I collected cigarette butts from the ground with my brothers and then cashed them in with Dad for a cent each. I tackled a thief to the ground after she stole my plastic jewelry (Later, in an attempt to get further revenge, I offered her marshmallows that I had glazed in Elmer’s glue.) and I was chased up a tree after calling my Hispanic friend white in comparison to our black friend. When the streetlights came on I made my way home to eat with my family and occasionally with the Indian college student we were hosting.
Fast forward 20 years. I have learned racial etiquette and I don’t offer Elmer's marshmallows to friends. I like to think my childhood prepared me for creative writing. Reality entertains in a way fairy tales never will.

I led a pack of 6th graders through my favorite young adult book, The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare. I had them keep a personal journal, commenting on each chapter. I didn't focus as much on what they were writing—my main goal was to get them comfortable with the writing process and trusting their thoughts. The majority of their grade was based on class participation and journaling homework. Every class was spent discussing the material and digging into the language through cultural and historical exercises. I also required them to write and deliver an end-of-semester speech to the rest of the class. Working with the same subject matter they strengthened their reading comprehension, writing, public speaking and hopefully their confidence as a consumer of literature.
